Coach Mike Mahlen and three Verndale Pirates have been honored by the state's Nine-Man football coaches.
Mahlen was named Nine-Man coach of the year and running back Kyle Ashman, fullback Casey Finck and defensive lineman Eric Bramer were named to the Nine-Man all-state team.
JV boys skate to tie
The Brainerd Warriors and Armstrong Falcons skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in junior varsity boys' hockey Saturday.
Scoring for Brainerd were Geoffrey Roberts, Zach Lundbohm and Mike Germain. Assists went to Joe Holden, Korey Horn, David Meyer, Brett Travica and Lundbohm. Tyler Ostman made 49 saves for the Warriors.
Six Brainerd Warriors junior varsity wrestlers went undefeated Saturday at the Coon Rapids tournament.
Jason Koering was unbeaten at 112, Danny Lasher and Devon Lambert at 119, James Strand and Mitch Yager at 130 and Shaun Chisholm at 152.

Harrington escapes with golf victory
In an exciting end to the silly golf season, Tiger Woods allowed Padraig Harrington to escape with a two-shot victory in the Target World Challenge on Sunday.
Harrington closed with a 1-under 71 and won $1 million, the biggest payoff in his career.
