The following area students graduated from Southwest State University and earned bachelor of science degrees: Heidi Lockwood, Aitkin, earned a degree in accounting; Renae Anderson Barnaby, Linda Bylander and Casey Stewart Trandem, all of Baxter, elementary education with summa cum laude honors; Phyllis Gehrls, Baxter, accounting; Thomas V. Hoppe Jr. and Kerri Vastila, both of Brainerd, accounting; Gina Ferrari, Crosby, accounting; Jennifer Kahlhamer, Crosby, business administration public administration; Shelly Lueck, Deerwood, elementary education; Rita Zilka, Little Falls, accounting business administration; Desiree Achermann Greenwaldt, Motley, elementary education magna cum laude; and Christine Miller, Motley, elementary education summa cum laude.
Ten students from St. Francis Music Center in Little Falls were awarded a $100 2004 Laura Jane Musser Merit Scholarship to be used for their 2003-04 tuition: Mira Marie Myrice, Pierz; Abra Fisk and Golden Fisk, Fort Ripley; Layna Diehl, Lyssa Diehl and Matthew Klos, Little Falls; Marissa Maynard, Rice; Naomi Toenies and Isaac Toenies, Randall; and Taryn Verley, Bowlus.
Heather Kappes, Brainerd, earned a master's of art degree from North Dakota State University. Kappes major was health, nutrition and exercise science.
Kellen Riley and Scott Bock, Brainerd High School students, placed in the University of Minnesota invitational debate. Riley took first place in the Lincoln-Douglas debate and earned a $1,500 scholarship and earned fourth place for the speaker award. Bock took second place in the debate and earned the speaker award.

Brett Jenkins, a sixth-grader at Washington Middle School, won a bike through Keep Kids Safe program sponsored by St. Joseph Medical Center Auxiliary. Jenkins decided to donate the bike he won to Washington's Sharing Tree program. The program is where unwrapped Christmas gifts are purchased for the school and then donated to Crow Wing County Social Services Department for delivery to area children and teenagers in need.
