OUR OPINION: TORTURE
Commentators made the observation earlier but it bears repeating: When the topic is the torturing of prisoners it would be foolhardy not to listen to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
VOX POP
To the residents of Pequot Lakes School District: You need to be aware that at the next board meeting a decision to hold a vote on renewing the present superintendent's contract for another year will be considered. In itself that's one of their jobs. However, it needs to be mentioned that two board members participating are done at the end of December which means that the two new board-elected representatives of the people who take office in January, would have no say in the process. Let's step back and take a deep breath.

OTHER OPINION: SURPLUS
Well, there is some good news this week. In the funny-numbers world of state government finance, Minnesota has returned to solvency for the first time in four years.
Open Forum: Coming to a Baxter neighborhood near you!
Residents of Baxter beware! Coming to your neighborhood is a psychiatric hospital or similar facility and our city will do nothing to stop it. Heck, they might even rezone the land to allow such a facility. Don't worry, though, our city council will put all kinds of conditions on it to protect you, even though, they are not sure how they can enforce these conditions. For all you know, people with dangerous conditions will be brought into your neighborhood. But, don't worry this will be a locked facility with a 10-foot high fence to keep the patients in!
