20 years ago (1989)

Proposed use of a 100-acre parcel of tax forfeited property in Baxter for a new junior high school met opposition from the Baxter city council. Mayor Don O'Brien said the city prefers the parcel, located west of the college, be used for business purposes.

30 years ago (1979)

Brainerd voters doubled their previous turnout in re-electing C. Elmer Anderson as mayor, and also returning fluoride foes Mary Koep, Don O'Brien and Jim Brown to the council. F. Parker Campbell was elected as treasurer, an office soon to be abolished.

40 years ago (1969)

(Adv.) Winners of the 1969 Nisswa Bait Shop's Big Fish Contest include: Wesley Maust, Pillager, 11-4 walleye; Terry Hanson, Brainerd, 6-4 largemouth. Other winners were a 21-8 northern, 1-8 sunfish and a 2-1 crappie by Axel Dahl, of Nisswa.

60 years ago (1949)

Melford A. Kurz, alderman from the First Ward, submitted his resignation from the Brainerd council at last night's meeting. It is effective Jan. 1, and is necessary because he will be moving out of the First Ward at that time.

80 years ago (1929)

City attorney D.H. Fullerton, Brainerd police and school officials were busy questioning 20 people, including 15 high school boys, regarding damage to property at the high school, in city hall, the old court house and at Gregory Park.

100 years ago (1909)

Dean White, Clyde Trent and Ned Brooke had a strenuous time coming in from the White cottage on Gull Lake, where they had spent the weekend. They were about five hours driving with the drifted snow up to the horses backs in many places.
