ZIMMERMAN (AP) -- Rescuers mobilized to search for two fishermen who fell through the ice on Little Elk Lake near Zimmerman. But it turned out the men escaped on their own.
Emergency crews were called and found a hole in the ice and fishing gear in the water Wednesday evening.
Matthew Carlson, 18, and Eric Mettling, 19, both of Zimmerman, were walking with two friends when they fell through the ice on the lake in east-central Minnesota.
They were able to pull themselves out of the ice, and went back to Mettling's home to change clothes. The two were returning to retrieve their gear from the water when they discovered the search was going on.
Fire departments from Princeton and Zimmerman, two hovercraft, two ambulances and the Sherburne County sheriff's reserves were all called to the scene around 7 p.m.
