College communication exercise

Students in the Central Lakes College interpersonal communication course in Brainerd learned the importance of listening, coping with conflict, perception, feedback and other skills in a pair of group exercises.

Instructor Kari Frisch asked students to keep a flexible rod straight -- easier said than done when the rod is held by a dozen or so individuals using only their finger tips.

"Each person thinks at first that it's everyone else who isn't keeping it parallel to the floor," said Frisch.

Instructor Kari Frisch asked students to keep a flexible rod straight -- easier said than done when the rod is held by a dozen or so individuals using only their finger tips.

In all three sections of students given the challenge during a recent class day, the rod continued to rise as the holders made adjustments.

Another exercise required the students to completely flip a tarp on which they stood -- without stepping off the tarp.

Each of the three sections of students managed to complete the task, but there were close calls.

The 19 CLC students in one class (right photo) maneuvered into tight configurations that included a shoulder-top hoist for Monica Sharp of Deerwood. Audrey Culver (left) of Pillager, Amber Novotny of Ironton and Erica Karpinski of Little Falls gripped the tarp's underside in an attempt to find the flipside.
