20 years ago (1989)

The late Ernest B. Miller, a veteran of three wars, received the rank of brevet brigadier general in the National Guard. Miller, who led Brainerd's 194th in the Philippines, enlisted in the Guard in 1913, fought in Mexico, World War I and World War II. He died in 1959.

30 years ago (1979)

A paper bag containing $400 in cash and checks was stolen from a parked car in Nisswa. An employee of the Sportland Caf told deputies that he had placed the bag under his car seat after closing. He stopped at Red's Pizza and the bag was gone when he returned.

40 years ago (1969)

Some 3,281 voters went to the polls to elect George Bedard mayor, and Ole Howard, Norval Anderson and Otto Heikkenen to the city council. The hotly debated Sunday liquor issue was defeated for a third time, this time by a two to one margin.

60 years ago (1949)

A new rural mail route operating from the Brainerd Post Office has been designated as Route 6, said Postmaster Joe Dunn, and it will go completely around Gull Lake. Formerly the route only operated during the summer months; now it will be year-round.

80 years ago (1929)

Approximately 80 basketball candidates answered Coach Warren Kasch's call of the season after school in the city hall assembly.

100 years ago (1909)

J.G. Dawes, former mayor of Pine River, now of Minneapolis, was in Brainerd in connection with the Cross Lake Railway. He said the railroad will be built starting next summer and as far south as Pelican Creek, but perhaps to the Twin Cities.
