It was one more person than last year in attendance at the Brainerd School District truth in taxation public hearing Tuesday.
Don Mink, Baxter, attended the hearing. Last year no one showed up. Mink, who moved to Baxter in May from Decatur, Ill., attended the hearing to learn what the school district's tax base is and to review the budget.
"This was just information for me," said Mink. "I was part of the school board in Illinois. I am on the Brainerd (Communication Education) Advisory Committee and I was talking with Paul Bloom (Brainerd Community Education director) and he encouraged me to come."
Mink said all of his questions were answered. He said Brainerd Business Manager Steve Dickinson presented the tax information in a straight forward manner.
Mink was pleased with his property taxes. His taxes decreased immensely when comparing taxes in Minnesota and Illinois.
The Brainerd School Board will certify the final levy at its meeting Monday. The proposed 2004 school levy was approved in September at an estimated $9.56 million or an increase of about $917,781 from this year. The school board may approve the final levy at this amount or lower.
The increase in the proposed 2004 levy is mainly due to state funding changes. Only 26 percent of the increase is from local decisions.
