Passage of the so-called Medicare reform bill is one of the most egregious examples of how Congress has been bought and paid for by corporate America. It brings to mind a quote by Benito Mussolini (for all you younger folk, the former Italian dictator during World War II): "Fascism should be more appropriately called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." On the day Congress enacts a law that prohibits states from even negotiating with the pharmaceuticals for lower drug prices, democracy is in serious trouble, and that day is here. As long as we have a somnambulant electorate that disdains its civic duty the transformation from democracy to oligarchy will soon be complete.
After the founding fathers had completed their enormous task, a woman asked Ben Franklin, "What kind of government did you give us?" He replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."
Show some respect
I feel compelled to write this letter as I have become very disappointed in the respect shown during the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. We are required to say it once a week in our schools. I am disgusted with the lack of respect shown by my fellow peers during the pledge.
Although I completely respect other people's choice not to say it, I also believe that if others do not wish to say the pledge, the least they can do is stand quietly and respectfully. Although I do not understand it, I also know that I have to respect others that do not believe in God.
Our nation is experiencing a time of war and world terrorism. The freedoms we all enjoy today are a result of men and women who have sacrificed for hundreds of years. The Pledge of Allegiance is a vow each one of us makes to be good citizens and to support our great nation and it's people.
Our great country presently has thousands of men and women who are serving our country. If you've ever talked to any of them you will find they need to know we support them, believe in the great nation we call the United States of America and in the great flag we fly that represents the freedoms we all take for granted every single day for "liberty and justice for all." God Bless America!
