STAPLES -- Lillian G. Harkcom, age 81 of Staples, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in Mesa, Ariz. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wes Johnson officiating. Relatives will receive friends on Friday evening from 4-8 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
Lillian was born on Nov. 8, 1922, in Elkton, S.D., to Charles and Daisy (Glenn) Bain. She moved with her family to the Wadena area in 1928. She met Lloyd Harkcom and they were married in Perham in 1942. They resided in Minneapolis for a few years before Lloyd entered the Army and Lillian moved back to Wadena. After World War II, they settled in Staples where they raised their three children. She was employed for many years until her retirement at the local Rexall Drug Store. In 1999, she moved to Mesa to reside with her son Dennis. Lillian enjoyed the annual trips she and Lloyd made to Mexico as well as camping and gardening. She was a very active member of the local VFW Auxiliary, serving as 6th District President twice. Lillian was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Lady Trainmen and the Staples United Methodist Church.
Lillian is survived by her sister, Rose Warneka of Big Fork, Minn.; a brother, Alan Bain of Oak Harbor, Wash.; two sons, Jack (Jackie) Harkcom of Staples, and Dennis Harkcom of Mesa, Ariz.; a son-in-law, Charles H. Mertens of Staples; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd, a daughter, Sandra, a grandson, and three brothers.
