Having three state participants back is a positive start when building a wrestling team.
Unfortunately, one of the top Brainerd Warriors may not be on the mat this season.
Senior Tyler Jensen, who finished his junior season with 132 career victories, 14 shy of tying Andy Pickar's school record, suffered a serious head injury in a football game Oct. 27 and had to undergo surgery.

Jensen was the Section 8-3A champion at 125 pounds and won two of four matches at state, for which he qualified three times. He was 40-4 with 20 pins last season. Medical officials will determine whether Jensen can wrestle this season.
"That's a pretty big hole to fill, you don't fill a hole like that," Warriors co-head coach Mike Boran said of Jensen's absence.
"Given his circumstances the past month we're just happy to have him with us," co-head coach Jim Kath said. "But, if there was a kid you could bet on possibly being able to wrestle this year, it would be Tyler Jensen. Now, whether that's possible for anybody to do, we're not sure."
Seniors Nick Lingwall and Scott Padrnos return with state experience. Lingwall, a two-time state entrant, was section champion and finished fourth in the state at 135, compiling a 35-10 record. Scott Padrnos, another two-time state entrant and section runner-up, had a 30-11 record and lost his only state match at 119.
"Nick had a great finish last year, he got a state medal," Boran said. "We're looking for big things from him, along with Scott Padrnos. Those two, Tyler and Jake (Patnode) have been together a lot of years.
"All four are captains, they're all good leaders. They've been together for so long it seems like they're brothers."
Patnode was third in the section last season at 140 and had a 31-11 record.
Other top returnees include junior Brandon Mutz, who was fourth in the section last year at 112 and had a 23-12 mark. Sophomores Aaron Padrnos and Nick Grausam split time at the lower weights, with Padrnos going 14-10, Grausam 18-11.
Chad Ohman, Sam Pagel and Dan Wheeler also gained valuable varsity experience as freshmen. Ohman went 17-24 at 152, Pagel (3-8) at 171 and Wheeler (3-12).
Junior Andrew Wachsmuth returns after missing part of last year on a trip. Three years ago he was third in the section at 103.
Senior Kyle Anderson and junior Pat Metzler will vie for the 275 spot. Anderson was 11-24 last season at 215, Metzler won two varsity matches.

"We've got some experience, especially with Scott Padrnos, Nick Lingwall and Jake Patnode, they're going to be pretty tough," Boran said. "We're just hoping some other kids step up and fill in where we need them. If things come together we could be fairly competitive. Time will tell.
"We have a pretty good group of freshmen. They're working hard, but they need time on the mat, and some competition. Most of them will be doing some JV until they get experience. Occasionally, a couple of them might be in the lineup."
"We should be tough at the lower weights," Kath said. "We hope to have some young kids step up and fill in. Obviously, having Tyler out of the lineup will be a disadvantage but we have to take that as it is.
"We don't have as much depth at 189-215-275 but we've got some kids that could fill in and we'll go from there. If some kids step up we should be solid."
