AITKIN -- Martha E. Schmitt, 89, Aitkin, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Riverwood Extended Care Center in Aitkin.
She was born April 12, 1913, in Crookston to Herman and Amelia (Kroll) Fiedler. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1933. She graduated from Madame DeGuile's Beauty School in Minneapolis in 1937. She managed Maxine's Beauty Shop in Owatonna for a time. She married Mark A. Schmitt on Sept. 1, 1940, in Bedford, Iowa. They lived in Grand Rapids from 1942 to 1950 when they moved to Aitkin. They operated Schmitts Furniture and Jewelry store for 35 years. She helped organize the Aitkin Doll Club in 1966 and was a past president of the organization. She was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church, had served as a Red Cross Gray Lady for five years, had served as superintendent of the Women's Division at the Aitkin County Fair for 15 years, had served on the fair board for 20 years, was a member of the Legion Auxiliary for 35 years and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary for 12 years. She was a member of the Aitkin County Historical Society.
Survivors include one daughter Karalynne Striemer, Esko; one son, Mark Schmitt, Zim; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Adalaide Korpi, East Grand Forks.
Her husband, who died in 1983; six brothers; and four sisters died earlier.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. James Catholic Church with Father Paul Fruth officiating. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Aitkin.
Friends may call one hour before services Sunday at the church.
