Engen, Anderson join board of directors
Donald Engen, retired certified public accountant, and Rollie Anderson, Anderson Trucking Service Inc., recently joined the Anderson Brothers Construction Co. Board of Directors, Brainerd.
Engen, a University of Minnesota graduate who lives in Crosslake, has more than 40 years of public accounting and business consulting experience beginning with the national CPA firm of Deloitte & Touche, and as a financial officer for the investment firm of John G. Kinnard and Co. Engen spent 17 years operating his CPA prior to joining Larson Allen CPA of Brainerd. Engen retired from Larson Allen in June after 22 years.
Anderson, president/chief executive officer of Anderson Trucking Service Inc. of St. Cloud, is a University of Minnesota graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration/math and economics. Anderson served as president/CEO for Anderson Trucking since 1972 and previously as chief of data automation for the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972. Anderson serves as a board member for Falcon National Bank and First State Bank of St. Joseph. He serves with the Bethel College Board of Governors, Harold E. Anderson Entrepreneurial Center Board of Directors, St. Cloud Technical College Leadership Council and Granite Equity Partners Board of Directors.
Shepard joins Edina Realty Crosslake
CROSSLAKE - Sherri Shepard, Pequot Lakes, joined Edina Realty in Crosslake as a sales associate working with her husband Greg Shepard.
Greg Shepard previously owned Prime North GMAC Real Estate Company. He joined Edina Realty in Crosslake a year ago.
Sherri Shepard worked as a licensed assistant with her husband as the sales and marketing coordinator. At Edina Realty in addition to the sales and marketing coordinator duties, she will be working with their buyer clients.
Hagberg named head PGA pro at Madden's
Glenn Hagberg was named the head PGA professional at Madden's on Gull Lake near Brainerd.
Originally from Cloquet, Hagberg attended Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Mich. Hagberg's golf internships included Eagle Vail Golf Club, Colo., The Village Club of Sands Point, Long Island, N.Y. and St. Ives and Tullymore Resort, Stanwood Mich. Hagberg has been at Madden's since 2005 and has been manager at The Classic at Madden's since 2006.
New management team at Ski Gull
Ski Gull, the community-owned, nonprofit organization, recently announced a new management team.
Carrie Lee is the new executive director. Lee has extensive professional experience, the Ski Gull Board of Directors reported. She has been involved in the 6th Grade Learn to Ski Program for three years and served on the Ski Gull Board of Directors. Her background is in real estate and financial consulting.
The board also announced the addition of Brian Moon, as maintenance manager at Ski Gull. Moon has more than 12 years of ski and snowboard industry experience, most recently from Summit County, Colo. He is a professional skier, has extensive experience in freestyle park design, construction and maintenance, and has professional and leadership experience.
New to the board of directors at Ski Gull are Shana Krantz and Adam Kalenberg. The board includes: Laurie Fitterer, president; D.J. Dondelinger, vice president; Ellen Frank, secretary; Charles McQuinn, treasurer; Todd Dunlap, director; Gary Goll, director; John McGuire, director; John Koupal, director. Ski Gull is scheduled to open Dec. 4.
Consolidated Telephone Co. Board of Director Stan Johnson was recognized for 25 years of service with the company.
Johnson represents District 3, which includes the communities of Outing and Mission. He was elected to the CTC Board of Directors in 1985 and served as board secretary from October 1991 to June 2010. During this time, Johnson earned five Excellence in Leadership Certificates along with the Director Core Curriculum Award in 2008. He is also a member, and past board member, of the Northern Minnesota Builders Association and a past member of the Outing Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club.
Roggenkamp gains certification
PEQUOT LAKES - Tim Roggenkamp, certified public accountant, of Pequot Lakes recently became a Sleeter Group Quick Books Consultant by passing their rigorous certification exam.
The Sleeter Group Consultants Network is a national community of accounting software and business experts that provide QuickBooks (and other accounting software) consulting, support and training to their businesses clients. With more than 600 members located throughout the U.S., Canada, and abroad. Sleeter Consultants serve more than 120,000 small businesses by providing expert accounting solution services. There are currently six Sleeter Group Consultants in the state of Minnesota.
Roggenkamp is also a certified advanced Quick Books Pro adviser, certified through Intuit, the publishers of Quick Books.
The first Holli-Walk is planned in downtown Brainerd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 with businesses displaying decorated windows, soup and hot toddies along with options to win prizes.
A map card and goodie bag is offered at Holli-Walk Central, at The Olde Open Window, 604 Laurel St. Participants may get 11 or more punches on a card from any participating businesses to be eligible to win more than $1,000 in prizes and three locations offer an option to be entered into a special Christmas Cash drawing.
A window decorating contest is planned from Dec. 1-9 with 17 business participating. Christmas Cash prizes awarded to those casting a vote either at the business location or online at DowntownBrainerd.com.
Participants may gather at the American Legion, 708 Front St., for drawings and music provided by Stage ONE DJ. Put your entry in the barrel at by 8 p.m. to be included in the drawing which begins at 8:05 p.m.

Chamber to host 2011 policy meeting
The Brainerd Lakes Chamber invites chamber business leaders to a luncheon meeting with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce as part of one of its Fall Regional Policy meetings from noon-1:30 p.m. Dec. 1, at The Bodyworks, 14742 Dellwood Drive in Baxter.
The focus of the meeting is "2011: New leadership, big challenges A look at the major issues facing Minnesota and Minnesota businesses."
The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, with its member-driven agenda, is preparing to represent its members on more than 50 key business issues in 2011. In addition, the state chamber has identified five priorities for the 2011 legislative session.

Business Expo Dec. 2
The Business Expo and Holiday Extravaganza is planned from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at Madden's Town Hall.
The 15th annual event has Brainerd Lakes Chamber members with exhibits and holiday decor, hor d'oeuvers, pictures with Santa, prize drawings and a silent auction.

Russell Herder awarded
Russell Herder, with offices in Brainerd, recently received three awards from the Minnesota Health Strategy and Communications Network for recent work.
The firm accepted the Admiral's Award of Excellence honors in the 2010 Beacon Awards competition.
Recognized work included two projects relevant to compulsive gambling for the Minnesota Department of Human Services, an educational video designed to increase treatment access; and a multi-media campaign involving street media and social networking created for use on college campuses.
In addition, RH received top honors for extensive strategic planning conducted to increase awareness of syphillis and its treatment. The campaign, with the Minnesota Department of Health and funded by the Centers for Disease Control, took place during several months.
Minnesota National Guard members and reservists are encouraged to thank supportive employers by nominating them for the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
The Freedom Award is the highest recognition the U.S. Government gives to employers for their outstanding support of employees serving in the guard and reserve. To date, 15 Minnesota employers have been nominated. Fifteen employers will be recognized with the award at a ceremony on Sept. 22, 2011 in Washington D.C.
Nominations are accepted at www.FreedomAward.mil through Jan. 17, 2011. Guard and reserve members and their families are eligible and encouraged to nominate employers that have provided exceptional support to military employees above the federal law requirements. Award nominees will be announced in the spring and the 15 recipients will be announced in early summer.
Almost one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve. The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense Agency, to recognize exceptional support from the employer community. In the past 15 years, 145 employers from across the nation have received this award.
Established in 1972, ESGR's mission is to develop and promote employer support for guard and reserve service by advocating relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws, and resolving conflict between employers and service members.
Lakewood Health System earns award
STAPLES - Lakewood Health System earned a Minnesota Hospital Association Patient Safety Excellence Award for its work in preventing retained objects in the operating room.
Lakewood Health System joined the Safe Account initiative, where Minnesota teams are working collectively to implement an extensive list of recommended actions concerning both the counting of and accounting for all items used during invasive procedures, especially in the operating room. The MHA Patient Safety Excellence Award is given to facilities that have achieved more than 90 percent of the recommended actions. Lakewood Health System is one of 21 hospitals in the state to have received all five of MHA's SAFE awards.
Lakewood Health System Foundation to sponsor event
STAPLES - The Lakewood Health System Foundation and the Lakewood Hospice and Palliative Care programs announced the 15th annual Season of Lights lighting ceremonies.
Proceeds from the lights benefit the Hospice and Palliative Care programs at Lakewood Health System.
The lighting ceremony will take place at two different locations - both of which are a change of venue from previous ceremony years. The first will be 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at the CentraCare Health System Hospital Chapel in Long Prairie and Dec. 7 two ceremonies will be 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Lakewood Health System Main Campus Patio Level classrooms in Staples.

Taco John's offers benefit to food shelf
Taco John's holiday promotion, Nachos Navidad will benefit the Salvation Army Food Shelf in Brainerd.
For every Nachos Navidad, available for purchase through Dec. 31, Taco John's, 301 N.E. Washington St. in Brainerd will donate 25 cents to The Salvation Army food shelf.
The Taco John's in Brainerd has partnered for several years with the food shelf.
In the month of October The Salvation Army gave out 31,007 pounds of food. The Salvation Army Food Shelf is a nonprofit organization serving those in need in the Brainerd, Baxter, Fort Ripley, and Merrifield areas.
