20 years ago (1989)

A Crow Wing County grand jury has indicted a 17-year-old Merrifield youth with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 15-year-old former girlfriend. The grand jury acted last week but the indictment was sealed until today.

30 years ago (1979)

Plans to check ice thickness for a fish house went awry last night when a truck went through the ice at Lum Park. Police arrived at the scene to find the back end of the truck sticking out of the water. Ice at that point was 2-3 inches thick.

40 years ago (1969)

Joseph E. Nolan, 66, Crow Wing county DFL chairman, died at his home yesterday. He was a former special Municipal Court judge, a former Brainerd police officer and a former Crow Wing county deputy sheriff.

60 years ago (1949)

Art Mulligan, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Mulligan will receive the Eagle Scout award. Those receiving Second Class pins include Robert and Wayne Dondelinger, Gary Fruth, Darren DeRocher, Gerry Imgrund, Duane Hanson and Gerald Henkemeyer.

80 years ago (1929)

The law caught up with a Merrifield man after the county sheriff's office and state game officials had searched for him for a year. He was wanted for possessing muskrat and coon hides out of season but had fled for parts unknown before he could be captured.

100 years ago (1909)

Frank Thienes, who conducts a saloon on South Broadway, was released from charges of selling liquor to a minor. Judge Warner ruled that there was nothing in the law preventing selling beer to the lad acting as agent to convey it to his father.
