Central Lakes College to honor fall sports teams

Posted: Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Central Lakes College on Friday will pay tribute to three fall sports teams that have been successful during the recently concluded season.

The national championship women's volleyball team, state runner-up football team and region champion men's golf team will be guests of honor for the Fall Sports Salute.

The free public event starts at noon in the Brainerd campus gym and concludes with cake, punch and coffee.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Larry Lundblad, CLC president, and head coaches Jane Peterson (volleyball), Greg Medeck (football), and Jim Russell (golf). They will announce post-season honors and review team success from the 2007 season.

The volleyball team captured the Division III championship at the National Junior College Athletic Association event at Rochester Nov. 17. It was the third national title since 2000 and also marks the third time Peterson has received national coach of the year honors.

The football team, coached by former Raider player Medeck, made his first year as head coach memorable. CLC went 7-4 and brought home state runner-up honors for the first time since 1991.

The men's golf team won the region and state championships to earn a fifth straight trip to the national meet at Chautauqua, N.Y., June 2-6, 2008. CLC claimed the national championship in 2005, was third in 2006, and seventh last spring. Russell was named region coach of the year for the sixth time in seven years.
