20 years ago (1989)

(Photo) Beatrice Henderson, who has been teaching piano lessons for more than 50 years, coaches 10-year-old Lissa Waller during a weekly session at Bridge of Harmony. Waller, who has taken lessons for four years, "wants to be as good as Mozart."

40 years ago (1969)

A vote in Baxter on consolidation with the Brainerd School District passed by a nearly four-to-one margin yesterday with 185 for and 48 against. Next step will be for the county auditor to set the effective date for consolidation.

60 years ago (1949)

The "10,000 Lakes" feature line on 1950 Minnesota auto license plates is the result of promotion instigated by Alec Ruttger, operator of Ruttger's Bay lake Lodge, and Merrill Cragun, owner of Cragun's Pine Beach Resort, members of the state resort association.

80 years ago (1929)

Henry Gordon, a 52-year-old farmer, was a member of a party from the Dean Lake Town Board on its way to Brainerd via auto to discuss purchase of a snow plow. The car, carrying four men, sideswiped a truck on Oak Street, overturning and killing Gordon.

100 years ago (1909)

The Longyear Exploration Co. has closed the deal to purchase the church and residence of the Norwegian Lutheran Church on South 7th Street. The church people are erecting a new $7,000 church on the same street. The old church will be used for coal sheds.
