(Photo) Skiers filled the slopes at Ski Gull, northwest of Brainerd, on opening day as temperatures rose slightly for more comfortable skiing. Not all runs were operating for the opener but are scheduled to open soon.

The Brainerd School Board discussed a request from the clerk of the Garrison school board that the Brainerd board visit their school. Garrison is interested in consolidating with Brainerd but wants to maintain its three-room school with two teachers.

Announcement has been made that the 54-acre island in Bay Lake, originally homesteaded by Joseph Ruttger, has been donated to the Minneapolis Boy Scouts for a camp. Recent owner Cuyler Adams sold the island to a man who gave it to the Scouts.
100 years ago (1909)
Residents of East Brainerd were treated to the sight of a large doe running at large through the streets of the city. Two hunters following tracks found the deer in a front yard on NE 13th Street. They shot at it but the doe swam Rice Lake and escaped.
