MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Isaiah Wahl rushed for 172 yards and tied a Prep Bowl record with four rushing touchdowns Friday as Westbrook-Walnut Grove capped an undefeated season by downing Cromwell 42-20 for the Class Nine-man championship.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (13-0) had three one-play scoring drives in the first half -- runs of 70 and 17 yards by Wahl and a 52-yard halfback option pass from Darren Tietz to Dan Butler -- to take a 34-8 lead.
Cromwell dominated the second half, scoring on a 1-yard run by Rick Smith and a 29-yard pass from Dan Nyberg to Bill Asp to close with 34-20, but Wahl's fourth touchdown, a 6-yard run, finished the scoring.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove accumulated 306 yards in total offense, 234 by rush, and held the Cromwell offense to 304 total yards, well below the 532.3 yards the Cardinals had been averaging.
Wahl made 16 tackles to lead the Chargers' defense, which allowed only 114 points in 13 games.
Cromwell, the 1998 state champion, set a Prep Bowl record by running 86 offensive plays and were in possession nearly twice as long as the Chargers, successfully converting on 8 of 11 fourth-down plays.
Smith ended up with 123 yards rushing and two scores. Nyberg completed 8 of 23 passes for 136 yards and Asp made seven receptions for 126 yards.
