AITKIN -- Tauno "Tom" V. Laine, 89, Aitkin, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
He was born June 5, 1911, in Aurora to Victor and Amanda (Toronen) Laine. He attended schools at Crosby-Ironton and graduated in 1928. He married Eileen M. Christensen on Jan. 3, 1931, in Crosby. They lived north of Aitkin for eight years. He developed his carpentry skills and helped build the Rialto Theater. During World War II, he relocated to Belleville, Ill., and then to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he did construction on the military bases. In 1944, the family moved to Minneapolis and he worked for Minneapolis Moline as a machinist. In 1950, they moved to Payette, Idaho, where he operated the Bancroft Hotel with his sister-in-law. In 1955, he went into the field of restaurant management and operated restaurants in Caldwell, Idaho, and later two restaurants in Boise, Idaho. By 1964, he returned to Minneapolis and was employed by Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. as a foreman until 1981. He also was an apartment manager. Following his retirement, they moved to Aitkin and lived on his parents' farm in Nordland Township. In 1997, they moved to Blackrock Terrace and lived there until moving to Aicota Nursing Home in 1999. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and helped with the building of the church fellowship fall in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen, Aitkin; a son, Warren Laine, Federal Way, Wash.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Marilyn Peck, and a sister, Taimi Ahlquist, died earlier.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Aitkin with the Rev. Jason Talsness officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Monday at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
