NEW YORK MILLS -- Funeral services were held for Dorothy Pernula, of New York Mills, Minn., on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minn., at 1 p.m. with Pastor Don Salo officiating. The music was provided by Andy and Janet Tumberg. The pallbearers were Damien Stalker, Evan Stalker, Jack McDonough, Paul Pernula, Craig Menze and Rich Nickles. Dorothy was laid to rest in Prairie Cemetery, Ottertail, Minn.
Dorothy Diana Pernula was born on June 6, 1915, in Goodland, Ind. Her parents were the late Raymond and Emma Elizabeth (Frohreich) Galbraith. The Galbraith family moved to New York Mills, Minn., where they farmed in Homestead Township. They purchased a farm in Pine Lake Township, rural Perham, Minn. Dorothy attended school in Perham, Minn. On Nov. 24, 1937, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wesley Raymond "Ray" Pernula in Perham, Minn. Their marriage was blessed with three children. Dorothy and Ray resided in New York Mills, Minn. From 1951 to 1957 Raymond and Dorothy owned and operated the Mills Cafe. Dorothy was a cook at the New York Mills Public School from 1957 to 1958. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where Ray worked for Dunwoody for 20 years as a maintenance engineer until his retirement in 1977. Dorothy and Ray returned to New York Mills before moving to Crosby, Minn., for a short time. In 1994 they made their home in New York Mills. Raymond passed away on Feb. 22, 1995. Dorothy enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and loved visiting with friends. She was an excellent cook and always brought her homemade flatbread every time she went to visit. On Nov. 19, 2004, Dorothy passed away at the Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, N.D., at 89 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond, infant daughter, Debra Kay, and a brother, Richard Galbraith.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Larry) Menze, of Mora; a son, Wesley (Kathryn) Pernula, of Brainerd; four grandchildren, Dina, Paul (Jana), Craig (Deb), and Jill (Rich); seven great-grandchildren, Damien, Evan, Jack, Katie, Ashlie, Bennett and Matthew; a great-great-grandson, Adrian; sister, Ruth Barden, of Bemidji; sister-in-law, Irene Galbraith, of Perham; many other relatives and a host of friends.
Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen and Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, Minn.
