Weisz advances in four events

The Little Falls Flyers survived.

Both Flyer relays, Whitney Weisz in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and Molly Binger in the 100 free advanced to Saturday's Class 1A state swimming and diving finals.

This after the 200 free relay placed fifth, the 400-free relay finished 13th, Weisz grabbed sixth in the 200 free and 11th in the 100 and Binger 15th in the 100 during Friday's swimming prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

The top eight places advance to the championship and places nine through 16 will swim in the consolation heat.

The remaining places do not advance.

Weisz's time of 1:59.04 in the 200 was slower than her section time of 1:58.7. Visitation's Meghan Weiss broke her own state record with a 1:51.88. Sartell's Marisa Wood was second with a 1:54.84. Binger just missed the finals placing 17th with a 2:02.23.

In the 100, Weisz swam a 54.69 and Binger a 54.91. Both times were slower than their section times. Weiss of Visitation placed first with a 51.70 just missing her state record of 51.38 set last year.

The best the two Flyers can do is ninth.

That's not the case for the 200 free of Weisz, Megan Voss, Brittany Then and Binger, which turned in a time of 1:40.66. The Flyers trail Sartell, which won the prelim with a 1:38.64, Visitation, Marshall and Monticello.

Five Central Lakes Conference teams (Sartell, Little Falls, Willmar, Fergus Falls and St. Cloud Apollo) advanced to the second day in 200 free relay.

Weisz, Voss, Carlee Davich and Binger swam a time of 3:46.49 in the 400 free, almost two seconds slower than their section time. Should they regain their section form the Flyers could secure ninth Saturday. Red Wing, which is ninth, swam a 3:44.19.
