The Brainerd Warriors started it all off.
In the first heat of the first event the Brainerd Warriors 200-yard medley relay team swam to 22nd place in the Class 2A state swim prelims Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
The Warriors touched out at 1:54.96, a second slower than their section 8-2A time a week ago. Still the team of Siri Smith, Della Gramer, Destiney Schindele and Sarah Dens, moved up three spots from their seed position.
"They had noting to lose," said Warrior head coach Dan Anderson. "When we went 1:53.94 that was about as fast as we could go. Our exchanges weren't quiet as crisp, but we did move up three spots. Even if we would have swam our section time we wouldn't have made the top 16 teams. This event was really fast this year."
Smith led off with a 29.74 backstroke. Gramer followed with a 33.65. Schindele clocked a 26.26 butterfly on the third leg and Dens' freestyle time was 25.29.
Siri Smith swam the first leg for the Brainerd Warriors 200-yard medley relay during Friday's Class 2A state swimming prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Brainerd finished 22nd.
"For us it was a major accomplishment just to get here," said Anderson. "We didn't put a lot of pressure on the girls. We tried to stay loose and just see how fast we could go."
200 medley relay: 1-Eden Prairie 1:47.19, 22-Brainerd (Siri Smith, Della Gramer, Destiney Schindele, Sarah Dens) 1:54.96
