ST. PAUL (AP) -- Election officials in Austin were looking for 17 missing ballots Friday in a state Senate race that was tied after a recount in two of the three counties with voters in District 27.
With recounted votes in Fillmore and Mower counties and the Nov. 5 results in Freeborn County, Sen. Grace Schwab and Dan Sparks each have 15,062 votes, Mower County Auditor Woody Vereide said. The recount in Freeborn County began Friday morning.
Election night results had shown Schwab losing to Sparks by 33 votes, prompting an automatic recount.
Vereide said the 17-vote discrepancy may go to the Minnesota Supreme Court. The auditor was meeting with the Austin city clerk Friday to discuss the problem.
"We simply don't have any idea what's going on," Vereide said, adding that he didn't think the ballots were tampered with.
In addition to the missing ballots, 25 ballots from Fillmore and Mower counties remain disputed, and the State Canvassing Board will determine which candidate gets each ballot next week.
