Mixed results 2 Warriors advance to finals; one eliminated Sports Editor Brainerd's Samantha Smith and Tiffany Etterman extended their seasons while Warrior teammate Katy Etterman saw hers end Thursday night in the Class 2A state diving prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Smith, a senior, who finished 14th last year, is in 10th place after eight dives with 225.95 points. The final three dives are scheduled Saturday night at the aquatic center.
"Sam's got some strong dives left," Warriors diving coach Mary Streiff said. "Our philosophy is that she's got to play some catch-up, but she wants to end up on that podium (top eight).
"Sam's hanging in there. She maybe feels like she should be higher up but I just said, 'Don't beat yourself up. You've got some great dives left.'"
Tiffany Etterman, another senior, is in 13th place with 211.7 points after eight dives.
"She's just diving consistently," Streiff said. "She had maybe one miss. That puts her in the thick of things in 13th place. She doesn't have a lot of difficulty left, but she has some.
"I think Tiffany can hold her own. She just happened to put eight solid dives together and made that cut."
After five dives, Smith was ninth with 151.85 points and Tiffany Etterman was 11th with 145.25.
Katy Etterman did not make the first cut, from 31 to 20 divers. She scored 114.35 points on five dives and finished 27th in her first state meet.
"She was just a little off tonight," Streiff said. "She's just a sophomore. It was nice to get her down here and experience it. I look for big things from her the next couple years."
