One has to seriously question whether the "real" threat to our way of life is from external forces such as terrorism, or if the greatest threat is corporate America! The truly Pan Global Corporations operate without borders, shifting as needed to protect assets.
We are under threat from them constantly as they eliminate jobs, health care, retirement benefits and shift the tax burden to you. Who do they answer to? No one, no country, and they show no allegiance to anything except profit. All well and good you say if you profit, but most of the profit lines the pockets of executives not stockholders.
Our political representatives make noise, like bringing in oil executives and then with "a nod and wink" send them on their way none the worse for wear.
Now your last middle class tax break, mortgage deduction, is under scrutiny for "a fix"
The truly bizarre aspect of all this manipulation and the threat it poses is that those who suffer the consequences make the payments.
If you think it makes any difference if you vote, or how you vote, you are sadly mistaken.
At the end of World War II, Corporate America paid 35 percent of taxes, in 2005 they pay 70 percent of taxes. Are you better off now, or do you just owe more?
If terrorism wasn't a threat (which it is) they'd have to invent something to take our focus off this insidious threat.
They don't even care if they give up the country to people who don't belong here, as long as those at the top keep getting richer.
So, wake up people, at the rate we're losing, there won't be any roses to smell.
'NIMBY' attitude toward mentally ill
I was saddened to see the strong attitude of "Not in my backyard" and fear that people are communicating in the article on the psychiatric hospital to be built on Grand Oaks.
People with mental illness are not people to be feared, but rather people who need our support, just as people with other types of illnesses or disabilities such as cancer, paralysis, or developmental disabilities need our support.
It's easy to become fearful of things we do not understand. The symptoms or behaviors that seems strange are caused by malfunctions in the brain. Incidents of violence by people with mental illness are very rare, however when they do occur they tend to be highly sensationalized by the media.
We need to educate ourselves and care because these are members of our community. Each person is someone's daughter or son, an aunt or a brother, a parent or loved one. I have been amazed at the people who come to me after finding out that I work in the Mental Health field and share with me about a loved one. The family members feel they have no one to talk to because of the stigma. The truth is, most people know someone who struggles with a mental illness.
Rather than withdrawing in fear, it is my hope that people will seek to increase their understanding and grow in their compassion. I hope that we seek to be a community that, rather than shunning our struggling members, we rise to welcome and support them and be known as a community that cares about those most in need.
My appreciation goes out to the services that are being offered in the community to support for our neighbors, friends and family who are struggling with mental illness.

Advice for President Bush
Why do some people assume that because you are against the war in Iraq, you are not showing respect for our troops? I think the best way to respect our troops is to bring them home from a war that we shouldn't have begun in the first place. After the 9/11 tragedy, I don't remember people rallying in the streets yelling, "Let's go conquer Saddam."
I am becoming embarrassed for our nation. I no longer think we are known as the land of opportunity. I think we have become the land of greed, corruption, incompetence and apathy. I think the chances of getting Bush out of office before the next election are slim to none. So I have a suggestion for him. Take another vacation. Go back to the ranch. Cut wood, ride your bicycle, drink beer, whittle, smoke marijuana. Do whatever you do when you are good old boy Bush. Stop thinking of ways to make your rich friends richer. Stop raiding the social security surplus and trying to privatize the system. Stop allowing all the pork in government. Stop trying to confuse senior citizens with 29 different drug programs. Stop subsidizing big business Stop appointing your incompetent friends to high positions. Stop trying to be a president. You have failed miserably. Stay away from the White House for the next three years.
A recipe for disaster
History has shown that, when a small or shuttered mind with a greed for power happens to get power, disaster will likely follow, when he finds total power look for total disaster.
When, a Papal Commission on population, in the 1960s, found birth control should be accepted by the Catholic Church, the-soon-to-be, Pope John Paul II, felt he had to reject the overwhelming majority of the commission. Acceptance of the findings would undermine the authority, continuity, and infallibility of his Holiness.
His greed for those supreme worldly and eternal powers would not let him allow for any change in the church's position and will continue to cause lasting un-assessable disasters for humanity. The right wing conservative leaders in this country re-enforced and added to those problems for us and the world.
In this country we have a narrow mind, that likes to be addressed as the "commander-in-chief", and who cannot admit to those mistakes, that included and add to, mistakes of Pope John Paul II.
When one, lacks knowledge and the morals that will accompany knowledge, plus have a greed for power, to see, and then admit personal error, (fallibility), becomes impossible. For to do so, is to humiliate yourself and your flock, when one is in that position they have to lack any ability to make corrections.
So we continue to build disasters most of which will be with us for decades, and some forever.
I hope that, most of those that have been hoodwinked by our Generalissimo, will be able to make the transition from blind faith to human morality, that understands our animal emotions, and will work to use reason and moderation in all human relations, rather than fear, hate, and greed.

Drugs can do considerable damage
I really enjoyed your pamphlet that you put out in the paper on the use of methamphetamines and how it is going up. I think that a lot of people really need to know what drugs can do to you, and how bad they are for the children and young adults. These are the two age groups that run into these kinds of drugs, and are peer-pressured into them or just want to see what it feels like to get "high."
I am one of these young adults and I know what it feels like to have that sort of pressure laid upon you. The last pamphlet was great, but I think you should send one out to get the message across to kids. The last one helped the whole community realize how bad it's really getting. Now you need to let the kids know what these kinds of drugs can do to you. I have family members and friends that use or have used meth, and I don't want to be the next one or see any of my other family/friends start up. I am a young adult that realizes what this, and other drugs can do to you. It's time to let others know what meth and other illegal drugs are about. I thank you for taking time to read this letter and I hope you take my ideas into consideration.
