BACKUS -- David J. Hoplin, age 63, of Backus passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at his home. Born March 3, 1940, in Pine River to Nils and Alice (Glover) Hoplin.
He served in the U.S. Navy from February 1958 to February 1961. He was a member of the Backus Legion Post No. 368. He worked for Land O' Lakes and as a welder and carpenter in the area for many years. David loved fishing, hunting and meeting his friends to play cribbage. He enjoyed the time he spent with his friends in Backus.
He is survived by his sons, David J. Mimm of Brainerd, and Jeffrey E. Mimm (Amy) of Minneapolis; granddaughter, Molly Mimm; sisters, Clara Weiss of Pine River and Dorothy Weiss of Brainerd; brother, James Hoplin; sister-in-law, Cleone Hoplin of Pine River; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews; former wives Linda Mimm of Pequot Lakes, and Mary Ann Huston of Backus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Carrie Hoplin, Mary Cadotte and Ellen St. John, brother, Paul Hoplin, and nephew, Gary St. John.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at First Lutheran Church in Pine River with Pastor John Twiton officiating. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Pine River with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 613 of Pine River. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.
