RUTLAND, Iowa -- William Merton Joenks, 68, Rutland, Iowa, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
He was born June 5, 1934, in Dakota City, Iowa, to Roy Wilbert and Irene (Chantland) Joenks. After his education, he served in the Navy. He married Shirley Danielson on June 21, 1959, in Humboldt, Iowa. After his discharge from the Navy, they moved to Rutland, Iowa. They moved to Pine River in 1970 and lived there for 20 years before moving back to Rutland, Iowa. He was a member of the Mildred Bible Chapel in Backus. He was a past commander and current member of the Frasier-Nelson American Legion Post 613 of Pine River. He was a former volunteer for the Pine River Fire Department and Boy Scouts leader.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tammy Sherwood, Pine River, and Denise Opatz, Randall; two sons, William Joenks Jr., Owatonna, and Tim Joenks, Belton, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy Joenks, Pine River, and Eugene Joenks, Sierra Vista, Ariz.
His parents and a sister, Julie Thompson, died earlier.
Services will be 2 p.m. at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, Iowa, followed by a visitation until 5 p.m. Burial will be in Pine River Cemetery.
