Brainerd teacher and coach Lisa Salo of Pillager was named the 2008 recipient of the Ward C. Burton Junior Development Award at the United States Tennis Association Northern awards banquet Nov. 15 at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington.
The Ward C. Burton Junior Development Award is given to an individual or organization who has promoted the growth of tennis for juniors and served the junior tennis community in USTA Northern.
Salo has coached youth tennis in the Brainerd area for more than 20 years. She runs the summer community education tennis program, from tiny tots to high school age players, and works with the boys' and girls' middle school teams during the school year.
She has coordinated the Junior Team Tennis program in the Brainerd area the past three years, qualifying for the national tournament in 2006. This year, she was one of five sites to run a USTA Northern Area Championship for 14-under and 18-under junior players and teams.
Her teams have been competitive on the court and have won sportsmanship awards at the Section Junior Team Tennis Championships. She encourages her players to participate in individual USTA tournaments throughout the year.
Salo also supported the efforts of the community group Warrior Way, Inc., in helping save tennis and other extracurricular activities from being cut in the Brainerd School District. Warrior Way raised in excess of $250,000 in three months, making scholarships available to players in need, while also establishing an endowment fund for all activities.
"Lisa is an incredible woman with a huge passion for youth and the development of tennis in our area of the state," Brainerd middle school athletic director Todd Lyscio said.
