20 years ago (1989)

Some 100 Christmas banners - 50 displaying a candle and 50 proclaiming Brainerd - A City for All Seasons - were installed by Brainerd Water and Light department workers. They were made possible by a $6,000 donation by the Brainerd Lions Club.

30 years ago (1979)

Joe Plut, the Mad Hugger from Brainerd Community College, has been invited back for a second appearance on NBC television's Real People show. The 90-minute special will be an anniversary of all the people who appeared on the show in its first year.

40 years ago (1969)

Snowmobiles may not be operated in Brainerd after 10 p.m. or before 6 a.m., and all machines must have mufflers to reduce noise to a minimum. Further, snowmobiles may not be operated on school grounds, parks or playgrounds.

60 years ago (1949)

A Brainerd barber, 68, and a resident here for 50 years, was found dead in his bed in a room in his shop. Death was believed to have been caused by fumes from an oil heating unit. There was soot in the room and other building tenants smelled gas fumes.

80 years ago (1929)

The city council was informed last night that rats from the city dumping ground in West Brainerd were invading the north side of Brainerd. Alderman Johnson told the council that the Brainerd Musical Club has filed a complaint asking the rats be exterminated.

100 years ago (1909)

O.B. Hamlin, who owns the building formerly occupied by Andy Hefferin's malt saloon, wishes the Dispatch to state that he had repeatedly served notice on Hefferin to vacate. He does not wish the public to think that he countenanced such a place.
