A former Minnesota man who is being held on charges he shot and killed a police officer and three others in Texas is familiar to Cass County authorities. Sheriff Jim Dowson said Daniel Hittle is a violent man who killed his parents near Motley in 1972.

The new 61,000-square foot K Mart store will open next week in Baxter on Highway 371, according to manager Patrick Giles. The new store will bring the company's total to 30 in Minnesota and 1,682 stores world-wide. More than 60 full-time employees are hired.

A second hockey meeting prior to the opening of recreational play in Brainerd has been called by Coach Bob House. He says teams will be formed for Squirt, Bantam and PeeWee leagues. House said a team for high school age does not yet have board backing.

60 years ago (1949)

A Brainerd hunter believes if at first you don't get your deer, try, try again. He had only two shells and fired the first at a buck, missing. When a doe appeared, the gun jammed. He fired the last shell at a third deer, hitting it, but had to dispatch it by hitting it with the gun.

80 years ago (1929)

A mysterious assailant last night shot and severely wounded Clifford Green from ambush at his farm in the Casino Hills northwest of Pillager. He was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd, then went into hiding and is under protection from another attempt.

100 years ago (1909)

Two Brainerd hunters ventured into the woods deer hunting. They had not been in the woods 15 minutes, and were standing talking, when a stray bullet killed a dog that was standing between them. They quit right there and pulled out for town.
