Verna (Sally) Mitchell, 95, "Grandma Mitchell," died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
Verna was born in Garrison, Minn., upstairs at her Grandma Persson's house on Feb. 17, 1910, to Ernest and Sylvia (Warren) Persson. She graduated from high school in Brainerd in 1927. She was the youngest in her class to graduate. She went to teaching college in Brainerd. She married Joseph Mitchell on June 15, 1934, at Lum Park in Brainerd and they had four children. In 1984, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She taught school for 35 years in Crow Wing, Onamia and Cove school districts. She also lived in Oregon for about 1.5 years with her husband and children. She will be sadly missed by her family.
Survived by one son, Ernest Mitchell, of Brainerd; one daughter, Jodie Williams, of Brainerd; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; her son, Joseph Jr.; her daughters, Loris Mitchell and Eve Kuschel; grandchildren, Mikie Mitchell and Shawna Kuschel; brothers, Bruce and Dan Persson; and sisters, Ardelle Phillips, Ione Liden and Zula Corning.
Services will be on Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd with Pastor Dave Gouldin officiating. Interment will be in Dykeman Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
