What a week it was for deer hunting employees of the Brainerd Daily Dispatch. Here mailroom worker Andy Cutkay is shown with an 11-point buck he shot Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. south of Brainerd. The buck dressed out at 236 pounds and currently is in first place in the Corner Store's Big Buck Contest. Cutkay said he first saw the buck three years ago but didn't get a shot until this year. It came in 10 yards from his treestand. (Dispatch Photo by Steve Kohls)
Brainerd Dispatch press operator Marty Chisholm bagged this 6-point buck Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m. east of Brainerd. The deer would have been an 8-pointer but he lost one brow tine and one G-3 in a battle with another buck. Chisholm saw the deer when it was 30 yards from his stand and shot it at 20 yards. Richard Johnston of Pillager shot his first deer, a 170-pound, 6-point buck, at 7:15 a.m. on the opening day of the firearms deer season. Johnston downed the deer with a single-shot .243 Winchester. Moments later, his father, Richard Johnston, Sr., who was sharing a deer stand with his son, shot a doe that was trailing behind. "We both filled out tags within about 10 seconds of each other," Johnston said. (Dispatch Photo)
