University's children's hospital will be topic at Dec. 1 Rotary meeting
Dr. Richard Vehe, director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology, will discuss the University of Minnesota's new Amplatz Children's Hospital at noon Dec. 1 at the Brainerd Rotary Club's meeting.
WHAT'S DOING
A benefit for Justin Banks, who was diagnosed with leukemia in June, is planned for noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Brainerd Armory. Donation for adults at the door will be $5; kids will eat for free. The Montana Sky Band will perform. There will be silent auction items as well as a live auction with a chance at an NBA All-Star ticket package which includes VIP red carpet treatment in Dallas, airfare, hotel and more. All proceeds from this event will go to the Justin Banks Benefit Fund.
Highway 71 opens to traffic in Wadena
WADENA - Motorists were able to resume traffic on Highway 71 through the city of Wadena when it opened to traffic Friday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reported.

NOVEMBER 15 - 60 years ago (1949) - Slayer of the biggest deer to date in the local deer and bear contest is Frank Gilmer of Brainerd with a 248-pound buck, just beating out the 241-pounder shot by Bennie Thrun of Fort Ripley. Contest director Earl Mondor says 368 deer are registered thus far.

Rosella "Rose" Berthiaume, age 85, died Nov. 12, 2009, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. She was the daughter of Frank and Julia Veit of Plymouth. Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Francis (Frank) Berthiaume, and grandson, Robb Berthiaume.
Open Forum
If you haven't heard of The Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project, I suggest you look into it. What is it, you say? LARJP is a program that works with victims and offenders of crimes committed by juveniles. The majority of these offenses are misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor crimes that are committed by first-time juvenile offenders.
OUR OPINION: COUNTIES
It's often the case that the best moves an organization can make are the ones that it doesn't. That's the situation with the Crow Wing County Board's polite turn-down last week of Wadena County's suggestion that the two counties share a county engineer.

I don't know who is responsible for lining the streets of Brainerd with flags on holidays but they forgot a very important one, Veterans Day. That shows dishonor and disrespect for the men and women who fought and died for our country.

Maybe we are on an every-other-month pattern as far as mild temperatures. September was beautiful, October was ugly and November has been nice. I guess I will look forward to January.

MINNESOTA FISHING/HUNTING REPORT
Large sucker minnows are producing muskies during the day on Lake Miltona and Lobster Lake. Minnows also have been the ticket for walleyes on Miltona in 30 to 50 feet. Deer registrations are comparable to last season, but there seems to be more bucks being harvested. Duck-hunting and pheasant-hunting reports have been limited.
