Six years ago, Kelly was a Kinship Partners child in need.
She was matched with a young married couple who responded to our article. When recently asked to write about herself and our program, Kelly wrote, "Kinship Partners is an organization that reaches out to children who need an adult figure in their life. I've been in this program for about six years. I really don't know what kind of person I'd be without the guidance my Kinship Partners have offered me. They've given me something and someone to strive after. They have helped me with problems I face and they help me experience adventures I otherwise couldn't afford.
"Everyone needs someone to look up to. It helps us become better people and gives us a lifetime goal. Literally, you can look anywhere and see someone to look up to, because people are everywhere, on TV, on the street, in the car next to you, wherever. The problem with this is that movie stars or everyday people are just people."
"A friend is what Kinship Partners offers. There are a lot of families out there whose parents maybe haven't made the best choices, or haven't given their children the best wholesome environment to grow from. Kinship Partners offers a positive role model to youth who might otherwise not have one. This in return keeps the community a wholesome area."
With the approach of the holiday season, Kinship Partners is especially thankful for the work of our wonderful volunteers who do so much for the youth in our community. It is a success story like no other, made up of hundreds of successes like Kelly.
You can be a part of this success by volunteering to become a mentor to a child currently waiting for a Kinship Partner. One of these is 13-year-old Kathy. She could really use a friend who can accept her moods and help her gain a sense of self-esteem. The young teen years can be notoriously troubling for girls, and Kathy is facing some challenging times. She likes being outdoors, taking care of animals, and enjoys music and art. Kathy is also interested in learning more about computers, and seems to have a real aptitude for it. If you share some of these interests you could be a good match for Kathy.
