Carmen Cummings, Brainerd, was named by the Rostrum, the official publication of the National Forensic League, as one of the league's leading students. The October issue identifies her as one of the top 60 National Forensic League Academic All-American point leaders in the nation. She is the first Brainerd student to achieve this status. The league is the leading honor society for students who compete in speech and debate activities, training youth for leadership in America.
LITTLE FALLS- A 27-year-old Little Falls man was in serious condition at St. Cloud Hospital Sunday after being involved in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 115, a half-mile west of Highway 371 north of Little Falls, reported the State Patrol.
The Brainerd Fire Department responded to three calls on Friday, including a gas line break in Baxter, an alarm in East Gull Lake and a brush fire in the Ahren's Hill area.

PINE RIVER - Veta Hardy, age 96, of Pine River, passed away Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River. She was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Ideal Township, rural Pine River, to William and Maude (Bowman) King. She married Reuben Hardy on Feb. 23, 1926.
NISSWA - David Evangelist, age 70, of Nisswa, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 13, 2005, at his home in Nisswa. Arrangements are pending and entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.

Pastor Gary Liker will officiate. Visitation will be held Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland and one hour prior to the service at the church. It's easy saying one's against the war, but does that mean always, usually, or just this war? Would it be better if Saddam still ran rape rooms for wives, daughters, and mothers to be tortured in front of their husbands, fathers, and sons? We could have relied on the U.N. and would now be up to toothless resolution No. 30 and Saddam would still be reaping cash from the U.N.'s oil for food program to finance rewards for suicide bombers in Israel.
