A hen mallard duck, impaled with a dart through the head, ate bread crumbs near Boom Lake Wednesday afternoon. A passerby called the DNR to report the unlucky duck.
The DNR workers suspected that someone with a dart blowgun cruelly blew the dart through the duck's neck. The mallard apparently was part of the flock of ducks that winters along the Mississippi River and Boom Lake in Brainerd.
Carl Mills and Tim Brastrup, area fisheries supervisor for the DNR, captured the duck and removed they dart on the scene. They used the bread crumbs to attract the duck so they could capture it with a fish net.
Brastrup, DNR area fisheries supervisor, held the mallard after he removed the dart.
The duck was taken to the DNR across the river where the wound was disinfected and the duck was to be released.
