Moran, Union in NCAA tournament

Julie Moran of Brainerd and the Union College women's volleyball team has qualified for the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament.

The Dutchwomen are 23-10 and will play conference rival Vassar 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.

It is the first national berth for the Union volleyball team. A victory Thursday would put the Dutchwomen into Friday's 7 p.m. match against top-seeded Nazareth.

Warrior varsity bowlers finish third

St. Cloud Apollo and St. Cloud Tech defeated Brainerd 3-2 and 3.5 to 1.5 Saturday at Granite Bowl North in St. Cloud Saturday.

In the position round, Apollo defeated Sauk Rapids to capture the conference title. Lee Anderson, Bryce Olshanski and Adam Gangestad led Brainerd with .800 percentage of fills against Apollo.

Against Tech, the Warriors were led by Olshanski and Gangestad with .857 percentage of fills. Sophomores Derrick Maske and Briana Wood, and freshman Nick Dally had seven of a possible eight fills.

The conference tournament is 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Little Falls Bowling Center. The winner earns a spot in the state tournament Dec. 7 at Doyle's Bowl in Crystal.

Junior varsity bowlers finish unbeaten

The Brainerd junior varsity bowlers defeated St. Cloud Apollo and Sauk Rapids last weekend at Granite Bowl North in St. Cloud.

The victories left the conference champion Warriors with a 12-0 record.

Erik Hukreide and Brent Olson led Brainerd with 1.000 and .923 percentage of fills against Apollo.

Against Sauk Rapids, Aaron Peeters and Shawna Simmons led the Warriors with .833 and .750 percentage of fills. Peeters had 10 of 16 possible strikes.

The junior varsity season ends 1:30 p.m. Saturday with a conference tournament at Little Falls Bowling Center.

Eastman to speak to boosters club

Central Lakes College women's basketball coach Dennis Eastman will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting, which begins noon Thursday at the Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen located at 923 Oak St. between the Triangle Store and Temple Baptist Church.

Swimmer Christina Roberts, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.
