The proposed 2003 Crow Wing County budget is getting closer to a final draft.
County Administrator Peter Herlofsky Jr. updated the Crow Wing County Board Tuesday the 2003 budget work.
The county board approved total 2003 expenditures of $53,041,889, and revenue of $28,277,783 with a preliminary tax levy of $19,453,512 in September. This left $5.3 million more in expenditures than revenue.
In the general fund alone, the proposed 2003 budget had $2,855,064 more in expenditures than revenue. Herlofsky said, after reviewing department head requests, he has reduced the difference in expenditures over revenue to $565,177 in the general fund.
"Based on the prior year activities where the revenues have exceeded expenditures there is limited risk on going into the general fund balance," he said. "However, the balance available in the county's general fund at the present time would be sufficient to cover that amount if needed to complete funding needs throughout 2003."
In the proposed 2003 general fund, there is now an estimated $19,264,188 in revenue and $19,829,365 in expenditures. The adjusted 2002 budget has $18,068,696 in revenues and $18,972,444 in expenditures.
Herlofsky also told the board to be aware the county will have to pay Brainerd $450,000 for the Law Enforcement Center in 2003. This money would come out of the general fund.
No positions were cut, said Herlofsky.
The county board will meet with department heads Nov. 27 to review the proposed 2003 budget in more detail and make any other necessary cuts to lower the gap between expenditures and revenue.
The final budget amount will be presented to the public during the county's truth in taxation hearing Dec. 5. The board must certify the final 2003 levy in December.
