ST. PAUL (AP) -- Quarterfinal games for the boys and girls basketball tournaments will be played in the Twin Cities beginning with the 2003-2004 school year.
The new plan was approved by the Minnesota State High School League on Monday.
Quarterfinal games currently are played at various sites throughout the state, and will be again this spring. Next season the games will be played at the Target Center and Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota.
Six games will be played at each site on Wednesday of tournament week in classes 4A, 3A and 2A. Class A quarterfinals will be played Thursday at Williams Arena.
The Class A schools in many cases are located well outside the metropolitan area. Those quarterfinal games will be played on Thursday to eliminate the hotel and meal expense of an extra day in the Twin Cities.
Semifinal games in 4A and 3A will be played on Thursday at Williams Arena. Class 2A and A semifinals will be played at the Target Center on Friday. All championship games will be played on Saturday at the Target Center.
The board also discussed holding the winter tournaments in 2005 a week later to avoid a conflict between the boys basketball tournament and Easter.
