Hjalmer Lester Franzen, 76, Brainerd, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1926, to Gustav S. and Martha B. (Thorson) Franzen in Brainerd. He served in the Army during World War II in the Battle of Luzon in the southern Philippines and was a military policeman in Japan. He received many medals. He married Dorothy Lorraine Eide on June 21, 1947, in Brainerd. She died Dec. 16, 1985. He married Ann P. Stepanek on Oct. 10, 1986, in Brainerd. She died Sept. 19, 1998. He worked his as a plasterer and mason in the Brainerd lakes area. He was a former Geritol Frolics cast member and an American Legion member.
Survivors include three sons, Vince and Rod Franzen, both of Brainerd, Rick Franzen, Kennewick, Wash.; two daughters, Pam Rice, Lake Shore; Loretta Johnson, Aitkin; two brothers, Kenneth and Gust Franzen, both of Brainerd; a sister, Christine Knapp, Kettering, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
His wives; his son, Loren; three brothers, Virgil, John and Herbert; and four sisters, Gladys Leikvoll, Violet Nichols, Irene Johnson and Ruth Wilmar, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with Pastor Jim Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 255.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
