NEW YORK (AP) - The compensation for 2009 free agents and potential free agents based on the 2008-09 rankings, compiled by the Elias Sports Bureau. The ranking standards were established jointly by the Player Relations Committee and MLB Players Association, to determine what draft choices are used as compensation for free agents under the 1981, 1985, 1996, 2002 and 2006 labor agreements between the Major League Baseball Players Association and the major league clubs.
Type A players are among the top 20 percent at their grouping and Type B players are among 21-40 percent in their grouping. A team losing a Type A or Type B free agent to another club receives amateur draft pick(s) as compensation. (SP: starting pitcher; RP relief pitcher):
