20 years ago (1989)

Gen. John Vessey, Jr., retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who lives near Garrison, called this week an exciting and interesting time to be alive. He referred to the news of relaxed travel and crossing places being placed in the Berlin Wall.

30 years ago (1979)

Tim Frazer, Brainerd's accomplished gymnast, scored a first and a second against the state's toughest competition in the 13-team Brainerd Invitational here, won by Park Center. Frazer won the vault and placed second in the floor exercise by 0.1 point.

40 years ago (1969)

(Photo) Deer hunters traveling through Pine River over the weekend were met by this display of five brush wolves set up by promoters of a statewide bounty system. Archie Shamp said the five, plus three more, were shot within two miles of Pine River.

60 years ago (1949)

Highlight of the 1949 sports year promises to be an intra-Dispatch bowling challenge between Torgerson's Terrors and league-leading Nelson's Nit-Wits. The terrors include Les Volkl, Bill McCollough, Roy Speed and sports editor Cedric Scholberg.

80 years ago (1929)

"Corporal Eagen," the home talent show, wowed a capacity audience again at the UCT auditorium. Attorney Hilding Swanson was pivotal in an exchange of jokes with the Bedal brothers, and Dr. G.I. Badeaux rendered a pleasant song selection with encores.

100 years ago (1909)

What is said to be the first report of town fence viewers to be placed on record in Crow Wing County was filed with the register of deeds yesterday. It involves the line fence between the farms of Henry Betzold and William Gildart, on petition of Gildart.
