Eight is enough.
That's how many Brainerd Warriors qualified for the state swimming and diving meet following their performances in the Section 8, Class 2A meet Saturday at Elk River.
The 200 medley relay of Krystal Halverson, Emily Dunphy, Erica Campbell and Amanda Bateman, Jocelyn Jones in the 50 freestyle, Christina Roberts in the 100 free and the 200 free relay of Jenny Wentworth, Brianna Elg, Bateman and Roberts qualified for state.
They also helped Brainerd to second place in the section.
Elk River won the team title for the sixth time in the seven years of two-class swimming. In that span the Warriors have been second four times.
The Elks scored 617 points, 200 more than Brainerd.
"Elk River is just in a league by themselves," Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. "We felt good about second place. That's the best we could do. That was our goal and we got it."
"I can't emphasize enough how well our girls swam. Every person cut time. We had some huge time drops, 10- and 15-second drops. That's what we've trained all year long for is to peak at this meet."
Although Campbell didn't qualify for state in the individual medley, she broke a 24-year-old school record with a time of 2:20.32. Dawn Clabo, the previous record holder, went 2:21.7.
"Erica actually broke the record in the prelims, then she went faster in the finals," Anderson said. "We were thrilled. It was a great swim."

The medley relay was runner-up with a time of 1:58.02.
"Elk River got out on us a ways," Anderson said. "We beat the third-place team by three seconds. You can't take any trip to state for granted. We thought we would get that one in and we were thrilled when it happened."
Jones was one of the unexpected bright spots, finishing second in the 50 freestyle at 25.64.
"Jocelyn came out of nowhere," Anderson said. "She is such a strong swimmer. She tends to get beat down by our training. She needed to rest, and boy, she just popped one.
"She was our fourth-fastest 50 girl two weeks ago in the conference meet. Jocelyn just flew. She had a grin from ear to ear."
After finishing fourth in the 200 free, Roberts bounced back to qualify by time standard in the 100 free.
"Christina was pretty disappointed after the 200 free," Anderson said. "She wanted to do well in the 200. The three Elk River girls are all going to place in the state meet.
"The two girls she was racing in the 100 were excellent swimmers. Christina took it out with them. She was even with them at 50 yards. Fourth-tenths of a second covered the top four. I think (54.85) is the third-fastest time in school history. I believe Dawn Clabo and Cori Severson are the only ones who have ever gone faster for us."
The 200 free relay was runner-up at 1:43.50.
"We beat Tech by 2/10ths of a second to get in," Anderson said. "I know Tech was very disappointed. I don't think they were expecting us. That relay hadn't beaten Tech the two times they swam before this year so they put it together.
"All of them swam great splits. It came down to Christina on the end. She had a split of 24.7, which was incredible, to bring that thing home."
