Students from Family of Christ Lutheran School attended the annual Northern Minnesota Lutheran School's Spelling Bee at Trinity Lutheran School in Fergus Falls. Students in grades three through eight from 10 Lutheran elementary schools in North Dakota and northern Minnesota competed. Students from Baxter competing were third-graders Jenna Lemieux and Hannah Kangas, who took second place; fourth-graders Hannah Guin and Elias Peterson; fifth-graders Ryan Benhardus and Alex Dullum; sixth-grader Jordan Nocton; and seventh-graders Jeremy Gallati and Matt Peterson. The students from Family of Christ placed in the top half of their grade level.
The following students from Riverside Elementary School in Brainerd were named students of the month for October: Mitchell Quail, Rainbow Buzzalini, Taylor Bikkie, Taylor Eide, Alex Moberg, Angie Wickham, Wade Geisenhof, Kaylene Madsen, Spencer DeRosier, Wyatt Steinke, Elise Carlson, Cheree Lane, Emily Dumbeck, Samantha Parrott, Andrew Olson, Haley VanSteenwyk, Anna Gessell, Courtney Tusler, Kendra Beach and Joe Frink.
Luke Brisk, the son of James and Sandra Brisk of Little Falls, a student at North Dakota State University, will be featured in an upcoming "Ask me about NDSU" promotional campaign. Brisk, who is majoring in informational systems and minoring in computer science, is involved in Bison Brigade, a student athletic booster club, student government and the Bison Ambassadors.
The following area students graduated from Bemidji State University: David Dahlquist, Pequot Lakes, earned a degree in mathematics; Cyrus Swann, Pine River, art; Kipton Sneen, Crosslake, art; Joseph Sundgaard, Ironton, criminal justice; and Erin Greenwaldt, Aldrich, degree with honors in social work.
Daniel Holbrook, the son of Thomas and Lynn Holbrook of Brainerd, is spending the fall semester studying at the Institute for the International Education of Students in Freiburg, Germany. Holbrook, a 2001 graduate of Brainerd High School, is a junior at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Holbrook is taking classes in German language study and other German-taught courses offered through Albert-Ludwigs University. The program also features numerous field trips throughout Germany.
The following students from Franklin Junior High School in Brainerd were named students of the month for October by their teachers: Eighth-graders Mike Hallgren, Ashley Deem, Kate Stevenson, Briana Tower, Anna Schweers, Karsten Jenson, Tyler Monda, Nathan McCullough and Don Nelson; and ninth-graders Katie Warren, Heather Erickson, David Hanson, Gabrielle Springs, Mardi Billman, Sarah Harris, Mitch Ohman, Connor Moore, Jeannie Rudbeck, Abigail Ahlberg, Krista Ramage, Cherie Murdock and Landon Stanfield.
Smokey Bear visited Jan Wilcox's kindergarten class at Lowell Elementary School in Brainerd recently. Smokey Bear, played by a community member, taught students about outdoor safety, fire prevention, safety rules and procedures.
