Baxter voters elected two new members Tuesday while a 10-year city council member was defeated by only 23 votes.
Rob Moser, who received 1,819 votes, and Jim Klein, who received 1,569 votes, were both elected to the Baxter City Council. Incumbent Mark Cross received 1,546 votes.
"It's an opportunity," Cross said of his defeat. "I was on the council for 10 years and we got a lot done. Whenever they need some help I'm more than willing to help out."
While Klein went to sleep long before any results were in Tuesday, his wife, Pat, woke him up to tell him he was elected to the council.
"I'm surprised and humbled, I guess," said Klein, who is a past city council member and former head of the Baxter Planning Commission. "They campaigned a lot harder than I did and I guess my name was familiar. I'm just honored that some people voted for me and I'll serve to the best of my ability."
"It's exciting," said Moser, who served for 10 years on the city's utilities commission. "I'm very happy to have won the position on the council. I'm ready to start working now for the citizens of Baxter and I'm going to strive to do what's right for the city."
Moser said he was "very, very humbled" by receiving the most votes in Tuesday's race and thanked those who supported him.
"I guess I felt confident but you never know until the end what's going to happen," said Moser.
