State Rep. Dale Walz, R-Brainerd, said Wednesday he again will co-sponsor legislation requiring public school students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance aloud together regularly.
"It is so important to instill patriotism in our young people," Walz said. "Many, many Americans paid a high price to maintain this country's freedom and it's good to regularly recognize how privileged we are in this nation."
The bill stipulates that students who don't wish to say the pledge may abstain without punishment. It also allows individual school districts to opt out of the requirement with a resolution approved each year by the school board.
Similar legislation was approved last year in the House but was rejected in the Senate.
