Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie, was happy she won Tuesday's election to the House District 11B seat but was also happy the race against Republican John Blashack of Bertha was conducted in a civil manner.
"We stayed positive, both of us," she said. "I think that's great. I don't know many districts that had the luxury. It's really nice."
She was leading 67 percent to 33 percent with 98 percent of the precincts reporting. Vote totals were 10,309-5,089.
Otremba prides herself on staying in touch with constituents at church events, plays and the activities in the district.
She was elected to the seat in a special election in November 1997 and re-elected in 1998.
Blashack, a dairy farmer, said the District 11B seat has been Democratic for about 25 years.
"We did what we could do," he said. "We pretty much went with the things we believe in."
He said it was difficult to predict what political role he might play in the future since redistricting could result in different boundary lines.
