So long, City of Ventura

VENTURA, Minn. (AP) -- It didn't last long. Voters in the central Minnesota city of Ventura recommended Tuesday that their City Council change the name of their city back to name of their old township, St. Augusta.

"We've got signs to change," said Mayor Ollie Mondloch, who had favored keeping the name Ventura.

There were 946 votes in favor of St. Augusta and 250 against that name, while 263 voters favored Augsburg, a hybrid of St. Augusta and the nearby hamlet of Luxemburg. There were 668 votes against Augsburg.

The community renamed itself Ventura in March after receiving support from Gov. Jesse Ventura in its battle to become a full-fledged city and stave off annexation by nearby St. Cloud.

The name does not change automatically. The final decision rests with the City Council, which must pass a measure to legally change the name.

Mondloch said he and each member of the council have agreed to support the will of the majority.
