20 years ago (1989)

Minnesota's three-day old deer firearms deer season has taken one life in the Brainerd area and put two people in the hospital. Sheriff Frank Ball said he has no details yet on the death that occurred a mile south of Pine Center.

30 years ago (1979)

Interference from a local radio station's transmitter may force Crow Wing County to move its emergency radio antenna. A Motorola employee suggested the antenna be moved to a television tower in west Brainerd to avoid conflict with KLIZ Radio.

40 years ago (1969)

Swimming, progressing on both boys and girls team fronts, with coaches Bud Schmid and Nancy Stavn, has added another dimension with a junior high squad. Brainerd swimming dates to 1962 when Greti Hill started a team at the new YMCA.

60 years ago (1949)

The first of the 1949 Christmas tree cuttings are moving through Brainerd to the southern markets. The new law which eliminates the need for tree tags from conservation officers will increase wildcat operations. Cutters are warned to get permission from owners.

80 years ago (1929)

Because the town board of Baxter decided to straighten a well-established road near his house, a bachelor farmer pulled the stakes out of the ground and went after Fred Potvin, road worker, with an axe. He was arrested, judged insane and committed to Fergus Falls.

100 years ago (1909)

James Hallett, popular 18-year-old junior at the high school, died last night of typhoid fever. Prof. Cobb asked the Dispatch to request that all high school pupils gather at the YMCA square tomorrow to attend his funeral as a group.
