CROSSLAKE - Dene A. Carney, 84, of Crosslake, died Nov. 3, 2008, at his home. Funeral services for Dene will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, at Crosslake Lutheran Church. Friends are welcome to visit Wednesday evening from 4-6 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake and one hour prior to church services. Interment will be at Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake. Memorials are preferred.
Dene was born May 30, 1924, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Percy and Thelma (Lamb) Carney. He graduated from high school in Nevada, Iowa, before graduating from the University of Iowa in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific. He received a Gold Star and two Purple Hearts. Dene was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Norma Bauer on Aug. 11, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Dene was recalled to serve his country during the Korean conflict from 1952-1953. He worked at the Des Moines Register, Better Homes and Gardens, John W. Forney Inc., Modern Medicine Publications and Jeno Pallucci Advertising Agency before moving to Crosslake in 1975 where he established Callender/Carney Ad Agency where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He was united in marriage to Jean Erickson at the Crosslake Lutheran Church.
Dene was an avid volunteer and served a number of local service groups, including Crosslake Lions, WAPOA-past president, LAMDA, initial founder of KLKS Radio, Crosslake Food Shelf, Crosslake Historical Society, Crosslake Library and Habitat for Humanity.
Dene will be missed by his wife, Jean; daughters, Caroldene Carney, of Hinckley, and Kim (Steve) Welch, of Anoka; brother, Richard (Ellie) Carney, of Creston, Iowa; four grandchildren, Katie, Nathan, Mathew and Jacob; and his companion, Gizzie II. Dene was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma; an infant son; his parents, Thelma and Percy; brother, Jack; and his companion, Gizzie I.
